Cluster Lunch: Prototyping & Design

BOOK NOW

Brian Gibson, alumnus of The Studio and EMERGE Artist, joins us for this month’s Cluster Lunch to talk about a joint project with Dave Webb, a current Studio Resident and Creative Technologist.

The project is a development of Brian’s ongoing creative practice ‘Making More with Less’ where he takes old technology and uses it to create new artworks. In this instance he has taken the pianola scroll of ‘Hands Across The Sea’ and used it as a canvas to create architectural map-like imagery with discarded tech. The scroll is currently hanging in the stairwell at The Studio, along with some other examples of Brian’s artwork.

Dave has worked with Brian to create a prototype app that, when scanned along the pianola scroll, will interact with the artwork to play percussive audio of the discarded tech items used in the creation of the work. The app can be accessed using an iPhone via the QR code on the wall next to the scroll.

Dave Webb is a Creative Technologist and lecturer in Creative Technology at Bath Spa University. Dave employs digital storytelling in collaborations with artists and makers to bring technology into their practice and creations in sympathy with their creative vision. Dave will also go on to talk about ‘Untruths’ – multi-sensory music. He worked with theatre maker and musician Jack Stoddart of Ramschackicious, on his ACE DYCP funding to develop ways to extend musical experiences to those with limited hearing using haptics and immersive lighting.

Held on the fourth Tuesday of every month, Cluster Lunches are an informal opportunity to meet Studio Residents and hear from local speakers working in your area. Please bring your own lunch.
