New Report Explores the Future of Immersive Audio in the West of England

A new report from The Studio and the Immersive Audio Network has revealed strong appetite for the growth of immersive audio in the West of England, while highlighting the barriers that artists, studios, universities and industry stakeholders face in developing the sector.

Drawing on responses, the research found that affordable access to specialist facilities and equipment is the single biggest priority for immersive audio development. Across artists, commercial studios and university stakeholders, respondents consistently identified low-cost access to spaces, technology and expertise as more valuable than new buildings or additional competitive funding schemes.

The findings suggest that the sector’s biggest challenge is not a lack of talent, but a lack of clear pathways into paid work. Respondents repeatedly called for stronger links between education and industry, paid placements, mentoring opportunities and better access to professional networks.

The report also highlights growing support for greater regional coordination, provided it helps improve access, supports grassroots practitioners and connects existing activity across the region rather than duplicating it.

As immersive audio continues to create opportunities across music, games, XR, film and creative technology, the findings offer a valuable starting point for future collaboration, investment and innovation in the West of England.
