What if the digital future belonged to everyone?

This collaboration between Frank Conversations Collective and the University of Bristol’s ESRC Centre for Sociodigital Futures brings a youth lens to some of the most pressing questions in tech today.

Lead curator Bashart Malik’s mini-documentary Is AI Taking Your Jobsdraws on a 2–3 year project involving young people from diasporic backgrounds, across Bristol, alongside artists, technologists, academics, and researchers. The result is a piece of work that asks who gets to shape AI and virtual reality, and whose voices are missing from that conversation. Supported by The Studio, Frank Conversations puts storyowners at the centre.

This short film hears from University of Bristol researchers and young people with a range of Bristol heritages, identities, cultures, beliefs and faiths, about how data and AI are shaping their futures.

Bashart Malik and ESRC Centre for Sociodigital Futures
Algorithms and AI are increasingly being used to make decisions in child welfare. How much do young people know and understand about how their data is being captured and processed? This new short film, part of the Caring for Futures project, explores this issue in detail with interviews from leading academics and researchers including CenSoF’s Debbie Watson and Lisa May Thomas. Six workshops were held with groups of young people from all over Bristol, to delve into their understanding of how their personal data is being stored and used. With interview and workshop footage, this film hears directly from researchers and young people about their views on data, AI and different possible futures.
