Sound and Music Cluster Lunch – Immersive Audio and Narrative (the making of Ghost Orchid)
Jan Meinema, immersive audio specialist and Sound Designer on Ghost Orchid, an immersive binaural audio play, will be talking about how he approached recording, editing and mixing this highly complex piece.
By recording in a real forest and kitchen with a full cast of seven actors using ambisonic, binaural and lapel mics, Jan was able to capture a spatalised audio representation of the different locations. Working with Director, Liz Felton, he then had the mammoth task of editing and mixing the material to create a coherent story world. The final piece was presented as an in earphone binaural shared listening event, using silent disco technology, in an immersive setting at Burdall’s Yard as part of Bath Digital Festival in May.
Come along to the Cluster Lunch to find out how he did it.
The Writer and Producer, Rachel Pownall, will also be present to answer any questions about writing for immersive audio and the challenges of managing such a multifaceted project. Ghost Orchid was supported by MyWorld and The Studio and was a Bath Spa University Immersive Audio Network Production in collaboration with Agapanthus Productions.
Cluster Lunches are normally held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, so we are bit early this month. They are an informal opportunity to meet Studio Residents and hear from local speakers working in the area. Please bring your own lunch.
About Jan Meinema:

About Rachel Pownall:
Rachel’s early career was in documentary filmmaking, but she has worked in the field of creative technology since finishing her MA in Scriptwriting at Bath Spa University in 2018. She set up Agapanthus Productions in 2022. Along with some creative tech projects, she has continued to write and her play ‘Tipping Point’ was staged at part of the Elevate Festival at Theatre Royal Bath (2023). ‘Ghost Orchid’ also started as a stage play, and Rachel has found the process of adapting it into an immersive audio play fascinating. She has found it has opened up a whole new area of creative possibilities.
