David Sloly
David Sloly is a creative technologist, audio and broadcast producer whose work has explored the intersection of music, technology and communication for more than three decades.
His career in audio and broadcasting includes creating, producing and presenting work for the BBC, MTV and Radio Caroline, including BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 4. At Radio 1, he also wrote and produced experimental comedy, an early expression of a career-long interest in using audio and emerging technology to explore new creative forms.
David was part of the launch team at Heart FM in London and later became Executive Producer and co-creator of Steve Jackson’s Morning Glory at Kiss FM. During that time, the team earned a Sony Gold Award and a MOBO.
Alongside broadcasting, David was closely involved in the transition to digital audio and DJ technology, testing and prototyping early digital DJ and broadcast systems in the UK and Ibiza.
His work in electronic music has included performing at Pacha Ibiza, Space Ibiza and Café Mambo, teaching at Point Blank Music School, writing on DJ practice and studying at STEIM in Amsterdam, the influential centre for experimental electronic music, new instruments and performance technology.
His engagement with emerging technology has continued throughout his career. More recently, David created, wrote and produced Made in AI, an AI-assisted podcast sitcom exploring artificial intelligence as part of a human creative production process. His wider work in creative technology and innovation has included projects with organisations including Google and Microsoft.
Across this work, David has developed a particular interest in sound as a means of encountering complex systems: using technology to make patterns, structures and relationships that are difficult or impossible to perceive directly available through listening.
At Lux Nova, this becomes a compositional practice. Scientific observations and complex datasets are translated into audible material, which David edits and shapes through electronic composition into finished musical works. Rather than treating data as an illustration of scientific phenomena, the work uses it as source material for musical experience.
David co-founded Lux Nova with Annette Sloly. They are currently residents at The Studio, Bath Spa University, where they continue to develop the project’s exploration of data, instrumentation and musical experience.
Annette Sloly
Annette Sloly is co founder of Lux Nova, where her work explores the point at which scientific information becomes perceptible as sound and the human experience that emerges through that translation.
Annette trained extensively as a classical violinist from an early age, developing to a level at which advanced musical study was open to her before choosing a different professional path. Her broader creative background encompasses instrumental music, singing, acting and storytelling, including professional work for television and radio. She subsequently spent ten years working across the arts and creative industries before training as a clinical hypnotherapist.
For more than fourteen years, Annette has worked as a Senior Clinical Hypnotherapist and Performance Anxiety Coach, supporting professionals, creatives and performers around anxiety, nervous system regulation and performance under pressure. Her practice draws on neuroscience-informed, somatic and psychologically informed approaches, giving her extensive experience of how attention, emotion, physical response and state influence human experience.
Within Lux Nova, these strands converge. Annette works at the critical point between scientific data and human hearing, exploring how patterns and relationships within datasets can be translated into audible material. Working with mappings of frequency, rhythm, texture and movement, she listens closely to how the information registers to the human ear, refining the translation until structures that would otherwise remain imperceptible can be meaningfully heard.
This material forms the sonic foundation of Lux Nova’s compositions, with David Sloly subsequently editing and shaping the audio.
