Ximena Alarcon

Ximena Alarcón is a sound artist and Deep Listening® certified tutor, with a PhD in Music Technology and Innovation, and 13 years of postdoctoral creative research experience listening to our migrations: through voice, language, body movement, underground transport systems, dreams and networking technologies. She completed a postdoctoral Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship in 2017-2019 at RITMO Centre at the University of Oslo, and is currently developing embodied interfaces for relational listening to expand our sense of place and presence, when interacting with others in close and distant locations. At The Studio, she is developing the second stage of the project INTIMAL – a telematic sound art research project, and a physical-virtual “embodied system” for listening to our migrations. She was awarded the Studio Recovery Fund in 2021 to develop and test the INTIMAL App©, a mobile phone application that invites people to listen to their “migratory journeys”, by walking and listening to their rhythms as “breathing”, and revealing excerpts of stories of women’s migration. Using non-screen based interfaces Ximena is exploring feelings of embodied emotional telepresence as relations emerge, and people experience alternative forms of being together, while resonating across dream-like experiences with/in time and space.
